Fingerprint dating or timing on silverware is possible using forensic analysis. The technique, known as Time Tracing Fingerprinting or Fingerprint Dating, involves using methods like time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) to age fingerprints.
TOF-SIMS detects the migration of fatty acids (lipids) in fingerprint residue over time. These molecules are small enough to ionize with TOF-SIMS and are easy to identify. The study shows that palmitic acid (green) migrates over three days from a fingerprint’s peaks to its valleys.
The accuracy of this method is dependent on various factors, including:
Surface type and condition (e.g., smooth or porous)
Environmental conditions (e.g., humidity, temperature)
Presence of contaminants or other substances that may affect fingerprint degradation
