The Trump administration has announced an investigation into child trafficking crimes across the United States, focusing on the U.S.-Mexico border, where criminal networks have exploited lax immigration policies in recent years.
Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller confirmed the administration’s commitment to holding perpetrators accountable and bringing an end to what he called an “endemic” problem.
“This administration is going to investigate every instance of child trafficking, labor trafficking, sex trafficking, child smuggling, and all the attendant crimes involved in that,” Miller said in a statement.
Miller urged full cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to combat trafficking crimes.
“Our message to everyone in the country is to cooperate fully with Immigration and Customs Enforcement so that we can end the scourge of child trafficking and child abuse that has been endemic these last four years,” he said.
The announcement comes amid concerns about increased child trafficking at the southern border since Joe Biden took office in 2021.
Criminal organizations have taken advantage of relaxed immigration policies, using them to profit from the trafficking of children, often for forced labor or sexual exploitation.
The Trump administration has pledged to crack down on traffickers with stricter enforcement measures and harsher penalties, including mandatory minimum sentences of 10 years, life sentences, and in some cases, capital punishment.
During Trump’s previous term, ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) worked together to close loopholes that had allowed traffickers to operate more freely.
These efforts are set to resume as part of the administration’s renewed focus on border security and combating trafficking.
In 2022, Miller accused Vice President Kamala Harris of being complicit in trafficking crimes.
Speaking to MSNBC’s Ari Melber, Miller alleged, “Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are the number one traffickers of children, girls, into sex slavery on planet Earth. How many people are in jail for that?”
Miller also warned of the broader implications of government inaction, saying, “The weaponization of government is the beginning of the end of American democracy, and every one of your viewers and listeners should understand that.”
