Israeli forces destroyed the Shrine of Shimon (locally also called the Shrine/Mausoleum of Saint Peter) in Shama, southern Lebanon, on Nov 15, 2024, during a ground incursion amid clashes with Hezbollah.
Lebanese sources (Al-Akhbar, Arabi21) report troops rigged it with explosives after using the site in fighting and blew it up on withdrawal. Video matches the rubble shown.
It's revered by local Christians and Shia, with folk traditions linking "Shimon" to the Apostle Simon Peter (cousin of Mary in some lore). However, the biblical Apostle Peter's verified tomb is in Rome's St. Peter's Basilica. The structure has an 11th-century minaret; claims of ~2,000-year age are unverified and exaggerated. No Israeli statement specifically addressed targeting it.
